Main area of activity of organization:

Peaceful use of nuclear energy; Radiative study of materials and Radiation Physics; Nuclear Security and Radiation Safety (Ecology, Radioecology, Radiobiology); Physicochemical problems of energy transformation processes; Transformation of renewable energy sources; Alternative power engineering

Main scientific achievements made over the last five years:

The processes of nuclear energy transformation and its utilization in the solution of environmental problems:

  • According to the theoretical simulation method a fall in the yield of hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide has been determined in the decomposition products of water containing a different concentration of dissolved oxygen under the action of electrons with the energy in the range of 1÷10keV.
  • It has been revealed that water-dissolved oxygen accelerates the process of phenol degradation in the phenol-contaminated water under the effect of γ-radiation.
  • The radiation-chemical transformation of the oil samples taken from oil wells, oil water and oil-polluted soils has been comparatively analyzed and it has been established that due to the oil transformation under the impact of abiotic and biotic factors on the environment its radiation resistance increased for 5.6 times (in soil), 8.5 times (in water) and this is explaned by the decay of the weak chemical bonds in oil composition under natural conditions

The radiation-induced processes in solids:

  • The pre-radiation oxidation of stainless steel generates an active oxide phase on its surface in the radiation-catalytic decomposition process of water. This result is very valuable in the fields of hydrogen safety of water-cooled nuclear reactors and radiation treatment of stainless steel.
  • A Si-based scintillation detector registering γ- and β-radiation and with η=60-65% quantum efficiency has been made.
  • It has been determined that at low radiation doses (10kGy), in the quantity of the filler equaled to 30% and more it is possible to induce luminescence ability of polypropylene (ZnS-CdS) based composites and obtain active materials with much more intensity.

Development of the scientific bases for studying the radioecological situation in the Republic, the effect mechanism of radiation factors on biological systems, radiation protection of living-beings and radiation safety:

  • The law of variation in the concentration of metals, radioactive isotopes and organic polycyclic compounds has been specified in the rivers of Kura and Aras streamwise in Azerbaijan.
  • For the first time the values of γ-radiation have been determined in accordance with the theoretical model of radionuclide distribution in the radioactive-contaminated areas  because of oil production.

Scientific problems

  1. Radiation Physics in solids: The kinetics and mechanism of the processes progressing in metals, semiconductors and solids of dielectric type in different media and under the effect of ionizing radiation have been studied. Some specific researches are carried out in order to reveal the laws of defect formation processes in the above-mentioned materials and the scientific bases of controling these processes.

Joint scientific-technical projects:

1.      To increase the radiation resistance of nuclear reactors;

2.      To make a new type ionizing radiation detectors;

3.      To increase the radiation resistance of solar energy converters;

4.      Radiation modification of the singularities of polymer and composite materials.

  1. Theoretical Physics

The processes progressing in solids (oxide dielectrics and semiconductors – AIIIBVI) under the effcet of ionizing radiation have been theoretically simulated, ionization states, the laws of exciton generation, the kinetic parameters of these processes, energy yields of defects, cross-section of dissimilation, concentration of radiation defects and etc. have been calculated. The processes of migration, recombination and capture processes of charge carriers in solid substances have been theoretically modeled. The changes caused by different defects in the singularities of solids have been revealed from the theoretical aspect and compared with the experimental results. The selection of the physical parameters have been modeled in order to optimize the operation mode of new- type ionizing radiation detectors.

  1. Nuclear Physics

Researches are carried out in the direction of identifying natural reactive decay products and their determination.

IRP is the only institution which conducts scientific and scientific-technical researches on Nuclear Security and Radiation Safety in the Republic.

Peaceful use of nuclear energy

The following studies are implemented on peaceful use of nuclear energy:

A)    Hydrogen production, accumulation and utilization which is a universal energy carrier using ionizing radiation and thermal energy released during nuclear transformations;

B)     Control the properties of different substances and production of the materials with a practical significance;

C)    Convert nuclear energy into chemical energy by means of different chemical processes;

D)     Sterilization of food and medicinal plants, medical facilities.

  1. Plasma Physics and technology

The laws of defect formation have been revealed in the solids of an oxide type under plasma effect. The laws of plasmon energy absorption in the substances of an oxide type, conversion into the energy of charge carriers and excited states and transfer to a surface level have been detected. The scientific bases of plasma-catalytic processes have been specified and the plasma-catalyic methods of hydrogen-universal energy carrier production have been developed.

  1. I.Radioecology, Radiation Safety

1.      Monitoring on Radiation Safety in radionuclide-contaminated oil production areas, manufacturing enterprises in Absheron Peninsula and study radioecological situation.  Study migration and degradation processes in natural radionuclide-contaminated areas.

II. Atomic-hydrogen power engineering

Develop the radiochemical methods of hydrogen production in hydrocarbon-contaminated water basins.

III.Radiative syudy of materials

UV-detectors on the base of Schottky barrier in lamellar crystals.

  1. Electron accelerator and its application

An electron accelerator with 4.5 MeV energy has been installed and put into operation in Institute. It is used in carrying out scientific researches on Radiation Physics, Radiation Chemistry and modification of substances.

            The Institute is the only institution for its main areas of activity in the Republic and has large scientific-technical collaborations in the world. Scientific researches are conducted on the projects, grants and contracts executing in collaboration with IAEA, NATO, UNO, Council of Europe, USA, Turkey, Russia and other countries and international organizations.

There is highly-qualified personnel and necessary technological potential in Institute to carry out the above-mentioned scientific and scientific-technical reseaches.

Brief information on the organization's history:

Radiation Research Sector of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences was founded according to the decision №27 on 21.05.1969 of State Committee for Science and Technology at USSR Council of Ministers in order to develop scientific and scientific-technical bases for peaceful use of nuclear energy, the study of the effect of different ionizing radiation on substances, the environment and living-beings, the physicochemical problems of energy transformation, radioecology and radiation safety in Azerbaijan.

            After Azerbaijan had gained independence the problems of radiation safety and nuclear security, radioecology, peaceful use of nuclear energy became much actualer in the Republic. That’s why by the decision №81 in 21.05.2002 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan Republic and the decision №13/1 in 03.06.2002 of the Presidium of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Institute of Radiation Problems was founded on the base of Radiation Research Sector.

Institute of Radiation of Problems is the only scientific institution within Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences which is carrying out fundamental scientific and technical researches and making domestic and international information exchange in the directions of peaceful use of nuclear energy, radiation safety, radioecology, physicochemical problems of power engineering, nonconventional energy transformation processes, radiation effects in solids and radiative study of materials in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
